Appliance electricity cost
Electricity use is measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh). Power draw in watts divided by 1,000 gives kilowatts; multiply by hours running per day to get daily kWh, then by days per month and your rate per kWh for the bill impact.
Nameplate wattage is often a maximum — refrigerators cycle on and off, and laptops vary with load. For always-on devices, use measured wattage from a plug-in meter when possible. Rates differ by utility, season, and tiered plans.
Example: a 1,500 W space heater running 4 hours/day at $0.15/kWh uses 6 kWh/day × 30 days = 180 kWh/month → about $27.00. Compare that to a 50 W LED bulb on 5 hours/day at the same rate: roughly $1.13/month.

Common questions
Where do I find appliance wattage?
Check the label on the device, the owner manual, or a plug-in power meter. Listed watts are often maximum draw — actual use may be lower for variable-speed or cycling appliances.
Should I use my total electric bill rate?
Use your marginal kWh rate from your utility bill (energy charge only, excluding fixed fees). Tiered or time-of-use plans mean the effective rate changes with total usage.
Does this include taxes and delivery fees?
No — this estimates energy cost from kWh × rate. Delivery, taxes, and fixed monthly charges are billed separately on most statements.
