3D printing estimates for makers: filament weight from length and diameter, bounding-box volume and infill material, rough layer-based print time, extrusion line width from nozzle size, and uniform model scaling with volume change. Material densities are typical defaults — check your spool label and slicer for job-critical numbers.
The scaling tool is the one that catches people out, because volume grows with the cube of a linear change. Printing a model at 200 percent does not use twice the filament — it uses roughly eight times as much, and takes far longer. Material estimates from a bounding box are deliberately rough: actual usage depends on infill percentage and pattern, wall count, top and bottom layers, and how much support a given orientation demands, which is why a slicer preview remains the authority before an expensive job. Densities also vary between materials and between brands of the same material, so weigh against your spool label. Time estimates based on layer count ignore travel moves, retractions, and acceleration limits, and tend to run optimistic on models with fine detail.
